LAKE MARY, Fla — Lake Mary girls basketball coach Logan Malmberg is having to learn a lot in short period of time while on the job.  That is because he is taking on a new challenge: He's coaching girls for the first time.

What You Need To Know

  •  Logan Malmberg was named Lake Mary girls basketball coach on Aug. 21

  •  He has been a basketball coach fore more than 10 years

  • This will be his first time coaching girls basketball

"There is a sense that they want to be a part of a family, part of a team," Malmberg said. "That seems to develop more naturally than with the boys. You can spend a lot of time in the boys programs working on team work, working together, but in a girls program some of that comes naturally."

The job opening at Lake Mary opened up after the school year started — he found out about it because he teaches television production at the school.

"Super excited to be here, super excited to work with these girls," Malmberg said. "A program with championship history and trying to get us right back where we should be."

But the learning curve doesn’t come without it’s struggles.

"We are going through a transition with a new coaching staff late in the year," said Malmberg. "Trying to grab everyone in the middle of the school year has it’s challenges and making sure everyone is academically and physically cleared to try out."

Logan grew up playing basketball but stopped after high school. After a year away from the game, he missed it, so he got into coaching. Even with over ten years of coaching experience, Malmberg is still learning new things.

"Every brick comes in one at a time, so that is what we did today," he said. "Laid the first brick and we will lay the second one the next time."
