Iowa's A.J. Epenesa is another one of the edge rushers in this draft class that is entering the NFL following serious college production.
Epenesa leaves the Hawkeyes with 26.5 career sacks and 36 career tackles for a loss.
He found is way into the Iowa defensive line rotation as a sophomore, leading the Big Ten with 10.5 sacks and adding 16.5 TFL and four forced fumbles. Despite the limited role, Epenesa still earning 2nd team All-Big Ten honors.
His junior year proved to be even more successful, with 11.5 sacks and 14 TFL while once again forcing four fumbles. Those numbers earning Epenesa First Team All-Big Ten and 2nd team AP All-American honors.
But the stats don't tell the true story of growth for Epenesa this past season.
"I was transitioning learning to take on those double teams, the chips, and all those different types of blocks," Epenesa said. "As the season went on you could tell I started getting better at it. Started being able to be more productive. But it just kind of came with me learning how to counteract those types of blocks."
Epenesa is big for an edge rusher at 6'5" and 275 pounds. He combines that size with strength and length to get after the quarterback.
There are concerns about if he'll be athletic enough to find success at the next level, highlighted by a 5.04 second 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine.
But Epenesa believes his game will work just fine.
"I'm confident that my best abilities are in the power rushes," he said. "Using length and using speed and kind of combining it together to move people backwards and make the quarterback uncomfortable by getting in his face with bodies."
Epenesa says teams have talked to him about not only playing on the edge, but also kicking to the interior of the defensive line. While he has that type of position flexibility, he is not well-equiped to drop back into coverage.
Epenesa is likely a late-1st to 2nd round selection.
