MELBOURNE, FLA -- Running out the the lockerroom onto the court, Daniel Shelton is at the back of the line.

That's the only time he West Shore senior forward is at the back of the pack.

“He wants to win. He has a drive to be successful," said Wildcats Head Coach Wardell Collins. "So he’ll do whatever it takes. Anything that’s necessary in order to succeed.”

Anything in any category.

“Whatever he puts his mind to he’s going to do his best," said West Shore AD Tony Riopelle. "He’s an eagle scout. He’s a varsity basketball player.  Varsity track athlete. He volunteers his time in numerous ways with different organizations and he’s taking all the AP courses.”

His time is spread thin, but to him it hasn't arrived just yet.

“I just always have this drive in the back of my head that says keep going because it’s not enough," Shelton said. "I don’t think what I do is enough. I want to do more. I want to help out more.”

That's the traits of a leader. Someone, not just a team or a school, but a country can depend on.

“I have high aspirations for myself and I want to go into the Air Force Academy. I’ve already applied. Hopefully I get in. Every since I was in 7th grade I’ve had that drive to do that.”

That drive has come with leadership and dependability. Those are qualities the Air Force is looking for.

Daniel's extra-curriculars aren't purely for a resume and an application. They're for the legacy he hopes to leave behind at West Shore.

“I don’t want people just to talk about me. I want people to be inspired by me I guess and say if he can do it. I can do it.”
