LONGWOOD, FLA -- It's a muggy Sunday morning at Alaqua Country Club.
Typically those would be dog days for Danielle Shelburne. Today is relaxed.
"I miss some of it," Shelburne said. "Right now I'm enjoying life as it is."
Life has been good lately. The head coach of Stetson's women's golf program welcomed her second child, a baby boy named Hudson, into the world two months ago.
For now it's family time with her husband Michael, Hudson and his big brother Brooks. With that, time on the fairways is sacrificed.
“You know you’re giving up control and I think for any head coach that’s challenging because you’re used to things being done how you want it,” Shelburne said. “On the other hand I wouldn’t have given it to anyone else.”
Stepping into Shelburne's shoes is assistant coach Eilidh Watson.
“When I asked Danielle about the chance of being her grad assistant she said that might work," Watson said, "and sneakily under the covers she knew that’d be the perfect time to have baby number two.”
Maternity leave and interim replacements are common. Earning that interim title as a graduate student is uncommon.
"It's pretty busy," Watson said. "I'm not going to lie."
The 23-year old assumed that title prior to the season. Watson is balancing coaching duties with the pursuit of her MBA.
“It was definitely an adjustment last fall when I transitioned over into the coach from a player.”
Even more of an adjustment considering two years ago Watson a member of Stetson's golf team. Even then most saw she had the makings of a coach.
“There was that bit of awkwardness because we’ve been teammates for so long.” said senior golfer and former teammate Erikah Neger. “She had always been a leader her senior year so I listened to her so whatever she says I’m like sure. It’s been amazing.”
As have the results. Last fall, the Hatters only had one top five finish. Already under Watson they have four including a first-place showing at the Hatter Classic this past week.
Does this mean Watson is a future head coach?
“That’s a loaded question for me. I’d love to coach. I’m very tempted but like I said I’m young so we’ll see where it goes.”
Stetson returns to action next weekend at the FIU Pat Bradley Invitational in Lakewood Ranch.
