DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - You usually hear Holly Cain before you see her.
The pitter pat of typing on a laptop is the soundtrack to her life. This veteran Nascar reporter churns out copy at a rate befitting a sport known for its speed.
"Regardless of what it is, she just brings that it quality to whatever she covers," said longtime Tampa Bay sports reporter Joey Johnston.
In her 29 years of covering racing, Holly's built a reputation as one of the best.
"She has the respect in that sport," Johnston said. "When she enters a press box or she goes to the track, they all know her, they all respect her work."
The Lakeland High grad watched her career blossom on racetracks across the country and that led to pitstops at the Tampa Tribune, as well as newspapers in Dallas and Seattle. There was just something about racing that drew Holly to the sport.
"I really like the people," Holly said. "The people really seem to make a big difference."
This USF grad has blazed a trail in the sports media business and she's blazing one in a personal battle. Holly's world came to a screeching halt when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer.
"I've been battling with it since 2014 and it's been quite a bumpy road," Holly said. "I've had different obstacles that have come up over the years and I'm still fighting it."
