  • Farmer Irvin Beidler calls each of the blueberry crops "a miracle"

And for a short time every spring, it’s blueberry season. Irvin Beidler is shepherding this little crop.

“It’s like a partnership with God, depending on him for the rain and the seasons,” said Beidler.

We’re not the only interested parties at the blueberry patch: flocks of migrating Cedar Waxwings are here, too. They like blueberries — a lot.

The farmer tries to work in connection with Mother Nature. Beidler uses recordings of predator screeches and Cedar Waxwing distress calls.

"It’s a pretty friendly way to try and discourage them. Not completely successful, but it’s an effort," he said.

As a farmer, Beidler says it’s gratifying to connect people to the food they eat.

Even if it’s only a few hours, they get to experience a farmer’s life on the land and taste the fruits of his labor.

Beidler calls each crop "a miracle."

"To see the new growth sprouting forth, it's just really amazing," he said.

Blueberry season lasts until about the end of May, depending on the variety.
