AUSTIN, Texas — From receiving a city honor to seeing her two owlets hatch, Athena the great horned owl, Austin’s favorite nocturnal bird, has had a busy week.
A 24/7 live camera at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center has allowed Austinites to track Athena and her owlets' progress as the mother owl hunts for prey, feeds her hungry owlets and occasionally naps.
Athena has hatched at least 20 owlets to young adulthood at the center for the past 13 years. She first nested at the center in 2012 and has been coming back ever since.
This year, Athena laid two eggs three days apart. On the day her second owlet hatched, city officials decided it was time to recognize Athena for her contributions to the city's wildlife in an official ceremony.
Austin City Council members Paige Ellis and Ryan Alter on Friday named Athena the official owl ambassador of Austin.
“By allowing us to witness her mothering at least 20 owlets to young adulthood, Athena has inspired a generation of Austinites, strengthening our city’s respect for wildlife and bond with the natural world,” Ellis said during the ceremony.
