DURHAM, N.C. — North Carolina Central University installed its new chancellor Friday.

Karrie Dixon is the first woman to hold the position of permanent chancellor at two schools in the UNC system.

Dixon, who previously led Elizabeth City State University, was appointed 13th chancellor of NCCU in June 2024.

Her installation Friday included a ceremony at McDougald-McLendon Arena on the Durham campus where she took the oath of office.

Under Dixon’s leadership, NCCU has seen the biggest percentage increase in enrollment in the UNC system. The school also set up an institute for artificial intelligence, the first historically Black university to do so.
