BUTLER, Ky. — Butler and Falmouth have issued mandatory evacuations orders. Heavy rain and flash flooding continue in the region through Sunday. The national weather service expects the Licking River will crest Sunday evening at just over 41 feet.

What You Need To Know

  • Mandatory evacuation orders are in place for Pendleton County’s two largest cities, Butler and Falmouth

  • Tomorrow, the electricity in Falmouth and the sewage system in Butler will be turned off

  • Butler and Falmouth officials said they’ll continue to monitor the situation through the weekend

Emergency crews and volunteers are preparing for worst-case scenarios.

“There’s a lot of rain coming between now and tomorrow night," said Rob Braun, volunteer public information officer for Pendleton County.

Braun said police officers and fire units are stationed in major areas, ready to help residents who may not evacuate their homes in time.

“They’ve stationed fire trucks, other emergency personnel,” Braun said. “The police are going to be on that island to take care of whoever fails to get out and then provide protection for the homes that are there that are empty.”

On Friday, April 4, Butler Mayor Mason Taylor issued a public request for resident to participate in a voluntary evacuation. On Saturday, April 5, the evacuation was made mandatory for both Butler residents to evacuate by 4:00 p.m. and Falmouth residents to evacuate by 8:00 p.m.

Both cities are taking steps to protect the infrastructure.

“Tomorrow the gas is going to be shut off and the city of Falmouth,” Braun said. “The sewer in the water shut off will be a game time decision. What happens is when the water’s come up, it can back up the sewer system. So, they close the valves to keep everything safe.”

Braun and city officials said residents should leave before travel becomes too dangerous.

“Expect more than you think it’s going to be, because that’s generally how it turns out. So better safe than sorry. Time to get out. And your home will be fine in your absence,” Braun said.

Butler and Falmouth officials said they’ll continue to monitor the situation through the weekend.
