RALEIGH, N.C. — The women and men of the Raleigh police and fire departments took to the ice Tuesday night to raise money for a wounded officer.
The crowd erupted at the Lenovo Center as RPD Officer Max Gillick dropped the puck to start the matchup between the Raleigh police and fire departments.
Gillick was seriously injured in a January shooting at a Raleigh subdivision.
Both agencies battled it out to raise money for Gillick and his family. The "battle of the badges" hockey fundraiser raised over $12,000.
Raleigh Police Officer Mike Mollere said the support is amazing.
“We have just got an incredible, incredible amount of support and love from the community. So, it's great to see all the people that have lined up to go inside,” Mollere said.“We have just got an incredible, incredible amount of support and love from the community. So, it's great to see all the people that have lined up to go inside,” Mollere said.
Hundreds of people attended the battle of badges, all in support of those who serve and protect.
Gillick begin working for RPD in 2022.
Lt. Cody Heakins with the fire department said although Gillick wasn’t employed by his agency, he and RPD are still a part of the same community.
“They're always there first to have our back, and we want to have their back as well, too,” Heakins said.
The FBI said roughly 300 law enforcement officers have lost their lives in the line of duty since the start of 2020.
Gillick's father, Mark Gillick, said he is thankful his son’s incident was not another line-of-duty death, and he's grateful for the care people around the state have shown him and his family.
“Literally baskets full. And I think that’s a neat thing about it was they weren't just cards that somebody just bought and signed their name underneath. I mean, there's letters in there,” Mark Gillick said.
Mark Gillick said his son is recovering at home.
Tuesday's game ended with the Raleigh Fire Department defeating the police 9-7.
