ST. LOUIS—A fire chief in Cape Girardeau County died Wednesday while performing a search and rescue mission after storms came through the area.
Whitewater Fire Protection District chief Garry Moore was searching for those who may be stranded in an area between Advance and Delta when he spotted an abandoned car off the road, according to Craig Williams, coroner for Cape Girardeau County.
It is believed that Moore was investigating the car when he died. His immediate cause of death is under investigation, Williams said. An autopsy will take place Friday morning.
Reports rolled in throughout the state of damages from the April 2 tornadoes. Potosi had a large tornado travel across the town, resulting in state action and various agencies assisting.
In southwest Missouri near Springfield, the National Weather Service team surveyed an EF-1 tornado, which traveled from southwest of Moundville to Nevada, to northwest of Walker. Eight train cars toppled over, widespread tree damage, some homes suffered roof damage and multiple businesses took damage too.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) posted photos from the damage in Moundville and Nevada.
