ORLANDO, Fla. — An unusual partnership between a personal injury law firm and a local barber shop in the College Park neighborhood is paving the way for children in need to get access to free haircuts.

The new program will sponsor the haircuts of 10 children on the first Sunday of each month.

Getting a fresh cut is a feeling most will agree makes you feel good about yourself, especially when that haircut is free.

“Even if you’re not homeless or things like that, you’re still struggling,” said foster mom, Andrea Elmellouki, who brought her three boys to the first Cuts for Kids event at Makk’s Barber Parlor.

Elmellouki came across the community outreach program through a support group for adoptive families on Facebook.

She says she was thrilled to see an event like this, where she could get her three boys, three fresh cuts.

“We do our best so any kind of support that we can get to help out with things that make them happy is really exciting,” she said.

The mother of three was especially happy knowing that her sons could feel like they fit in at a barbershop like Makk’s, adding that “a lot of times in being in foster care we get offered a lot of opportunities and a lot of the opportunities are, I hate to say this, but subpar opportunities.”

The new program was launched as a way to help give kids in the community a chance to feel just a little better about themselves with a fresh haircut.

It’s something that attorney at Moore Payne Law and the brains behind the event, Geoff Moore, says he’s passionate about.

“There’s no better investment than our youth, so helping kids build more confidence through education, through outreaches like this, there’s no better way to reach our youth and that’s something we really take pride in,” said Moore, who regularly frequents the College Park barber shop.

His barber, Robert Cisneros, has been giving haircuts to kids and adults alike at Makk’s for two years.

He says he knows firsthand what it feels like to feel good after getting a fresh haircut.

That’s why Cisneros wants to pay it forward, and share that uplifting feeling with those who need it the most in his community.

“I think that’s great because having a haircut makes you feel better, you know, and I think everyone needs a barber, everyone needs a haircut,” said Cisneros.

Knowing that his little customer Carter felt confident after getting a high skin fade, means he knows he did a good job.

Moore says as long as he gets interest from the community, he intends to continue to expand the Cuts for Kids program to other businesses in the area down the line.
