CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A suspect was killed Friday evening in an exchange of gunfire with police that left two officers wounded, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said.
Officers went to the 12000 block of Headquarters Farm Road about 4:30 p.m. to serve warrants, police said in a statement.
When officers encountered the suspect, there was an exchange of gunfire, Police Chief Johnny Jennings told reporters at the scene.
Two officers were shot, suffering injuries that were not life-threatening, Jennings said. The suspect was declared dead at the scene.
The wounded officers were released from hospital Friday night, Gov. Josh Stein said.
The officers were serving warrants for "multiple violent criminal actions," Jennings said.
"It's somebody we've been looking for for quite a while," he said.
Because two officers were shot, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police will lead the investigation, Jennings said.
State Attorney General Jeff Jackson said on social media that he is extending his office's support to the police investigation.
