COVINGTON, Ky. — Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) are looking to cut costs, which could lead to the closure of federal offices and termination of thousands of workers not only in the commonwealth but across the country.

What You Need To Know

  • The Department of Government Efficiency's website lists businesses that are closed and money allegedly being saved

  • Nineteen federal offices in Kentucky facing cuts are listed in the “wall of receipts”

  • Three federal offices in Louisville are listed

  • Employees working for Mine Safety and Health Administration have not been affected

On the DOGE website, 19 federal offices in Kentucky facing cuts are listed in the “wall of receipts."

Spectrum News 1 spoke to people in three of those offices last week who all confirmed they were still open at that time and employees were in the buildings working. In one phone call, an official revealed the Small Business Administration Office in Lexington listed on the DOGE site may have never even existed.

Spectrum News 1 reached out to the other 15 offices listed and spoke to employees at three of them. An employee at the Social Security office in Campbellsville and the one in Hazard not only answered the phone but confirmed the offices are open.

A spokesperson from the Department of Labor told Spectrum News 1 that employees working for Mine Safety and Health Administration have not been affected. Other offices potentially affected that Spectrum News 1 was unable to reach included the Office of the Secretary, Departmental Management and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

One man employed by the U.S. General Services Administration said he just recently learned he had been terminated. While he did not want to be identified, he shared he'd been employed with GSA for more than two decades and was part of a team that helped managed several federal office buildings across Kentucky.

For now, it is unclear how many people across the state have been let go and when exactly some of these offices will close for business.
