Melbourne Police say she tried crossing the street despite the light being green.

One car hit the teen into another lane, where a separate car hit and threw them into the grass.

A medical helicopter rushed the teen to an Orlando hospital.

A nearby resident, Renee Atasoy, recalled the incident saying she heard a loud bang outside.

“They said somebody got really hurt in that accident,” Atasoy said police told her at the scene.

Atasoy has lived in the Sarno Road area all her life and says it gets more congested year after year.

She recently planted large palm trees at the front of her property to make it safer.

“I thought, ‘hey if a car comes careening off the road, it may or may not provide a little bit of protection.’ You never know when a car is going to come running through the house,” she said.

This area sees more than 26,000 cars and trucks daily.

The part of Sarno at Garfield is a four-lane undivided roadway with a posted speed limit of 40 mph.

A recent study by the Space Coast Transportation Planning Organization showed some 50 pedestrians and more than 100 bicyclists use crossings there.

Recommendations by the organization have not been acted on by Melbourne officials, including one that calls for a widening to five lanes, which would be an $18 million project.

Atasoy says it’s a sad reminder with this teen being hurt that safety is everything on busy roads, and educating kids on the dangers is vital.

“They don’t have the judgement an adult would have,” she said.

Melbourne Police say all involved have been questioned about the crash, but if anyone else has information, they are asked to give them a call.
