PALM COAST, Fla. — The Palm Coast City Council voted unanimously Tuesday on a project to address deteriorating stormwater infrastructure.
The project will focus on the rehab of 17 stormwater pipes beneath Belle Terre Parkway.
Some residents say this project is a step in the right direction.
Kandi Stevens has lived in Palm Coast for the past 10 years, and said she’s experienced flooding in her yard.
She believes it was caused by new construction in her area.
“They’re built higher than my home, so I get the water now from three homes instead of just my home, and that’s where the water is coming from in my backyard,” she said.
Stevens created a group on Facebook where about 1,000 people share their stories about flooding issues in their yards.
“My page is called Flooded in Flagler County,” she said.
She’s now found a solution for her problem, but when it consecutively rains for days in the summer, the problem worsens.
In a Palm Coast City Council meeting on Tuesday, the city unanimously approved a contract to rehabilitate and solidify 17 stormwater pipes beneath Belle Terre Parkway.
The goal of the project will be to extend the life of the pipes and address issues at the structures and dips in the road.
With construction close to local schools, city officials said residents will experience lane closures, which will cause some traffic backups.
Stevens says it may cause bottlenecks of traffic, but the project needs to happen.
“Them doing this project after school is out is a great idea,” she said.
Stevens said she’s been happy with new leadership trying to fix the aging infrastructure.
“This is a beautiful place to live," she said. "We just want to try to keep it this way."
City officials say the goal is for the work to take place while Flagler County schools are closed for the summer.
