DUNNELLON, Fla. — She has been guiding people on horseback for nearly two decades.
“It’s my two favorite things — horses and nature,” said Sandy Johnson, who takes riders into neighboring Goethe State Forest in Dunnellon.
“To come and see what Florida looks like in its pristine state — it’s a little mind boggling it’s so beautiful,” Johnson said. “And driving up and down the highway all day, we forget it’s out here. And this is what it all used to look like.”
Johnson wants to help you change. It’s a short ride from her ranch into the forest.
She saddles and helmets visitors on trained rescue horses.
Johnson passes on her enthusiasm for nature while riding.
“I like the way the forest changes throughout the seasons,” Johnson said. “I love that if we pay attention, we might see some animals, might see a cool bird or a snake.”
And that enthusiasm — it’s catchy.
“It helps people understand this is something they may be missing in their everyday lives, and they need to make a concerted effort to try to have more interactions with nature throughout the year just to be happy, healthy people.”
The rides last an hour or two hours and are by appointment only.
