Voters in Green Island approved sending students in grades 9-12 to Watervliet High School beginning in September, according to the Heatly School.
The 135 to 28 vote means the Green Island Union Free School District will pay the Watervliet City School District tuition for educating about 55 high school students at an estimated cost of $400,000 a year over the next five years.
Transition activities will start over the next several weeks. Students and families will receive additional information about Watervliet High School’s academic offerings, scheduling and transportation. Grade-level shadowing at Watervliet is planned for early spring.
“I would like to thank our community and everyone who participated in today’s vote and the process leading up to it,” Green Island Superintendent Dan Kalbfliesh said. “We understand this may not have been the easiest decision — but in approving this plan, our community has confirmed their commitment to providing the best possible opportunities for our high school students and also, their strong support of preserving the Heatly identity.”
