ORLANDO, Fla. — Members of First Baptist Orlando are calling for a miracle as the wife of Pastor Bill, Lucy Pat Curl, spends another night in a coma at Orlando Regional Medical Center, fighting for her life.
On Friday, Jan. 31, Lucy Pat Curl was brutally attacked in her home by a 55-year-old man posing as a Community Service Officer.
Now, she is on life support and not expected to survive. According to the Orlando Police Department’s Arrest Affidavit, “any surgery to assist with the swelling in her brain cannot be completed” because of her age and prescribed medication reducing her chance of survival.
Eighty-five-year-old Curl served alongside her husband Bill for the past 52 years at First Baptist Orlando.
Since the news of Curl’s attack, the Central Florida community has rallied its support for a woman, who, according to First Baptist, “has helped Orlando be filled with love, joy and kindness.”
According to OPD’s arrest affidavit, Curl told detectives that she responded to Ronald Dwayne Davis after he banged on her front door and rang the doorbell, Friday between 10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.
Davis, who posed as a community service officer, told her that he needed to search her home, according to police.
Police assert that when Curl asked for proof of identification, Davis reached for his ID and proceeded to force his way into Curl’s home.
That’s when police say she was repeatedly struck in the head and knocked unconscious with what they believe was a crystal candy jar, despite putting up a fight.
Shortly after the attack, Curl could not find her phone, and she got into her car and honked the horn for nearly 15 minutes in hopes that someone would hear her, but to no avail.
A few hours later, Curl was discovered on the couch by her husband, William Curl, who then called the police at 1:36 p.m.
The affidavit indicates that among the evidence found at the scene was Davis’ wallet and driver’s license.
After retrieving Davis’ driver’s license from the scene, police discovered he was released from the Florida Department of Corrections on June 11, 2024, after serving a 15-year sentence for the following crimes:
- Burglary of a dwelling
- Robbery- false imprisonment
- Dealing in stolen property
- Receiving money from a pawnbroker by false verification
- Theft
Police also allege that Davis stole jewelry and other items of value from the home during a search warrant at the time of his arrest, early Saturday morning.
Davis faces three charges of Home Invasion Robbery with a Weapon, Aggravated Battery on a person 65 or older/Great Bodily Harm and Aggravated Battery with a weapon in relation to the incident.
All this coming as a shock to church members, who gathered for services at First Baptist Orlando Sunday and shared the grief being felt by all.
First Baptist Orlando Pastor David Uth said, “No matter what happens around us, no matter the evil that comes against us, no matter the chaos of our world, our god is big enough to take the worst hell can do and bring good out of it.”
According to the pastor of Ministries & Administration for First Baptist Orlando, Dr. Matthew Robinson, Lucy Pat Curl “is the embodiment of love and grace, and has shown Jesus’ love to tens of thousands of others over the past five decades.”
Robinson adds, “The care shown and prayers from the community and our church family have comforted her family in their horrifying time.”
In the meantime, updates of Lucy Pat’s condition are being shared with the community on CaringBridge by Curl’s family.
