ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Orange County has plans in place to widen a busy road in Waterford Lakes area.
However, one Orange County resident believes more needs to be done sooner to make that intersection safer.
Tamikia Smith said crossing Woodbury Road between Lake Underhill Road and the SR-408 overpass is very difficult and dangerous.
“It’s safety for the kids,” she said. “There are two apartment complexes across from Woodbury and students are using that every day.”
The Florida Department of Transportation estimates close to 20,000 vehicles use that road every day.
Smith said it’s a challenge to cross at the entrances to Waterford East Apartments and Tortuga Bay Apartments.
“This traffic here on Woodbury is completely busy, and it’s really hard to cross the street right here,” Smith said. “There’s no crosswalk. No stop signs. No traffic lights.”
As of now, the county’s current design plans do not include a traffic signal.
“At this moment, the plans call a full opening of the median at the entrances to Waterford East Apartments and Tortuga Bay Apartments, but there are no plans to construct a signal,” said Orange County Spokesman Darrell Moody. “Of course, this can change, but I’ve been told the study did not call for a signal.”
Moody said that because the project is unfunded, construction won’t start for another few years.
Smith hopes the county reconsiders other measures for Woodbury Road.
“The goal is to make sure that everyone is safe and to prevent accidents, like you don’t want it to be a wake up call for something to happen before you do something. Like let’s fix it now before it gets worse,” said Smith.
