ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. — A Seminole County resident is hoping a recent change in construction on State Road 436 by the Florida Department of Transportation will help ease congestion.

Vernon Prince said it’s always busy on State Road 436 between Interstate 4 and Palm Springs Drive near the Altamonte Mall.

“Why is it that we have traffic like this? But it’s always like this here. I don’t understand why,” he said.

While Prince believes the traffic lights are unsynced and causing clogged roads, FDOT Communications Manager Timothy Freed said the lights are running in coordination throughout the day.

“The signal timings are synced and running in coordination throughout the day,” said Freed. “However, there is currently an active construction project in this area with temporary lane closures along SR-436.”

Freed said the seasonal rise in travel activity near a major commercial area and the previous lane closure could have caused more backups along State Road 436.

Since Spectrum News 13 reached out to FDOT, they have reopened the outside lane on State Road 436, and said it will remain open for the duration of construction, which should end early next year.

“We will no longer be having continuous lane closures in the outside lanes through the project limits, though we still expect occasional intermittent closures to complete work in specific areas,” said Freed.

Prince hopes the reopened lanes help with the congestion he faces in that area.
