There are some who are now assessing the damage and moving debris to the curb. That’s the case for Miguel and Karen Acevedo in South Daytona. Their apartment complex along the banks of the Halifax River was flooded during the height of the storm.

“Right now, you are just seeing the aftermath. (If) you would have been here three or four days ago, it would have been a disaster zone. I mean literally underwater everything,” Miguel said.

Miguel says they are now trying to assess the damage and get back what they lost.

“We just got our electric back so imagine all this devastation, no water, no electric and I have a son who is a stroke survivor, my wife disabled,” he said.

While times may seem rough, Acevedo says he is forever grateful because at the end of the day he, his family, and community all have each other.

“We were blessed, we were blessed because thank God that like I said, it’s just material wise. It could have been worse, it could have been way worse,” he said.

Others in a nearby Daytona Beach community are looking to churches and nonprofits for help, including Mount Zion AME Church.

“It is needed because they lost everything and they really don’t have anywhere to go so until those emergency resources are made available to them," said Senior Pastor Sandra Williams. "We wanted to be here to serve in any way that we can."

During their first hour, she says they gave out more than 300 meals.

“It is important for this community to come together like never before,” Williams said.

South Daytona Leaders say they are continuing debris pickup throughout the week and continue supporting residents who are in need.
