CINCINNATI — Pete Rose, a leader in MLB hits and a player who bet on the game, died this week at the age of 83.

Rose was known for breaking his hero Ty Cobb's career hits record, totaling 4,256. However, the former Phillies and Reds player is even more known for being the one who was banned from baseball.

He was banned in 1989 after an investigation found he had bet on baseball, including his own team, crushing his hopes of reaching the Pro Baseball Hall of Fame.

Dubbed "Charlie Hustle," Reds fans admired his grit and talent throughout the 60s and 70s. He was a 17-time All-Star, played in three World Series winners, was the National League MVP in 1973, the World Series MVP in 1975 and holds the major league record for games played (3,562) and plate appearances (15,890).

To honor him, fans placed flowers near his statue outside Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati.
