MELBOURNE, Fla. — After a recent rainstorm flooded several roads in a Melbourne neighborhood, the homeowners association is now being held accountable.
What You Need To Know
- A rainstorm flooded several roads in a Melbourne neighborhood recently
- The homeowners association put in a makeshift dam at the storm drain to make pond water prettier, a city official said
- That dam was the only way to drain the rushing rainwater, he said
- City crews removed the dam and put the HOA on notice, Melbourne Streets and Stormwater Superintendent Dennis Burke said
Residents in the Longwood subdivision off Lake Washington Road had to call public works after water from a retention pond flooded the intersection of Aurora Road and Commodore Boulevard, along with several of the homeowners’ yards.
The public works crew discovered a makeshift dam at the entrance to the storm drain that was put in by the HOA to make the pond water higher and more aesthetically appealing, according to Melbourne Streets and Stormwater Superintendent Dennis Burke.
The illegal dam blocked the only way to drain the rushing rainwater, Burke said.
Now the HOA is being held accountable with a warning, and flyers are being sent to residents, Burke said.
“I had staff come out here, put a chain on it, and snatch it off of there (they altered it), they did. We’ve already notified our compliance department. They notified the HOA president. We are putting them on notice," Burke explained. "They are going to have to go through St. John’s (Water Management District) now to get a proper skimmer on here.”
Days after the storm, a Brevard County crew came out to clear out the drainage pipes to prevent it from happening again.
