DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — The city of Daytona Beach is honoring the life and legacy of Ghazi "Gus" Osta.

Osta was killed during a shooting on July 19 at the jewelry store he owned, Volusia Gold and Diamond, according to the Daytona Beach Police Department.

At the city commission meeting Wednesday night, Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry presented Osta's wife, Leigh Osta, with a proclamation declaring Sept. 4 "Ghazi Osta Day."

Leigh spoke about the impact the shooting has had on her and her family.

"I mean, it's going to change you. It would change anyone," she said. "But I think we are also more determined to be strong and to carry on with Volusia Gold and Diamond. I think that's what my husband would want for us and also for the community that he loved so much."

Leigh also says that her family plans to for scholarships in her husband's name, including one with the Gemological Institute of America.

83-year-old John Craiger was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of attempted first-degree murder in the incident, according to police.
