Honolulu Ocean Safety announced a new lifeguard tower has been installed at the popular Kalama Beach Park, which is close to the center of the 2.5 mile stretch of Kailua Beach.
“Kailua Beach is one of several beaches where we needed more lifeguard coverage. This is an exciting time for Ocean Safety and because of our city and residents support we are continuing to increase lifeguarding services to help ensure beachgoers are safe,” said Kurt Lager, Acting Director of Honolulu Ocean Safety, in a statement.
Lifeguards stationed at Kailua Beach Park responded to more than 500 calls over the last five years. Among the 911 calls, nearly 100 were in the area of the new tower and were for emergencies that ranged from drownings to shark sightings.
About $400,000 in funding was secured by Windward Councilperson Esther Kiaʻāina, which covered the tower and its installation, rescue gear, medical supplies, an All Terrain Vehicle, and staffing.
“The installation of a new lifeguard station at Kalama Beach Park is a welcomed addition to the Kailua shoreline. It will alleviate lifeguards stationed at Kailua Beach Park from covering this large area, improve response times and ensure greater peace of mind for local families and visitors who enjoy Kalama beach,” said Kiaʻāina.
The tower will be staffed seven days a week, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
