MELBOURNE, Fla. — Two students were sent to the hospital Monday after an altercation at Palm Bay High School, the Melbourne Police Department said.

Investigators say the incident happened at around 1 p.m.

The school was placed on lockdown temporarily, and police blocked all entrances and exits. The status at the school was changed to shelter in place about an hour after the altercation so educational activities could resume, police said.

"During the incident, one student received a stab wound to the abdomen, and the other had a cut on the hand," the department said in a statement. "Both involved parties have been identified and transported to separate hospitals and are in stable condition."

One student was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, and one to Palm Bay Hospital in Palm Bay. Officers said that action was taken to keep the students separated.

Melbourne police are still trying to determine what led to the fight.

"It's (the investigation) still preliminary. We are still trying to conduct that part of it," Sgt. Ben Slover of the Melbourne Police Department said.

So far, police did not disclose the ages of the students involved or say whether either student, or both, would face charges in connection with the incident.

Officers said the altercation was an isolated incident and that there is no danger to the community at large.
