The FBI is warning the public about scams involving gold which involves scammers impersonating government officials and using couriers to retrieve cash.

According to the agency, from May to December of last year, it's complaint center reported more than $55 million in losses.

One scam involves telling victims that their accounts are hacked and they need to protect themselves liquidating their assets.

Another scam is where they send couries to meet with the victims to retireve cash or validate transactions.

Some tips from the agency include protecting your personal information, not disclosing said information and not clicking on unsolicited pop-ups. Do not contact unknown numbers and don't allow strangers access to your computer.

"These gold bar scams, we are seeing people lose massive amounts of money, half a million, three-quarters of a million or even over a million dollars, in one pop and scammers dont discriminate. They cast a wide net and will take from anybody who bites," FBI officials said.
