PALM BAY, Fla. — An uptick in crashes has a Brevard County man wondering what can be done to keep drivers safe at the intersection of Grant Road/Eldron Boulevard and Babcock Street in Palm Bay.

What You Need To Know

  • Scott Sallade says it’s dangerous to drive through the Grant Road and Babcock Street intersection

  • Brevard County found a recent increase in crashes

  • Palm Bay is studying whether a traffic signal is needed at the intersection

Scott Sallade said he is concerned for his family and neighbors traveling through that intersection.

“When we first moved in 10-11 years ago, it was already a dangerous intersection,” Sallade said.

Sallade witnessed a bad crash when going to pick up his daughter.

“It was a near miss for me,” he said. “The car ended up splattered with radiator fluid. Thank God everybody was OK, but it happened right in front of me. It was pretty scary.”

While drivers on Grant Road/Eldron Boulevard have a stop sign, drivers on Babcock Street don't have to stop.

Sallade started an online petition to get something done.

“I’ve pushed for the traffic signal recently. It would be nice to have something here,” he said.

The Brevard County Traffic Operations program manager said there has been an increase in crashes at this intersection in the past month or so. Engineers are evaluating why and what can be done.

The city of Palm Bay has initiated an engineering analysis, which will determine whether a traffic signal should be installed at the intersection.

The county would be the ones to install the light, according to a spokesman.

“Biggest fear is our new driver we have, our daughter at that intersection,” Sallade said.

He’s hopeful Brevard County and Palm Bay act swiftly to make the intersection safer.
