PONCE INLET, Fla. — Another swimmer has been bitten by a shark in Volusia County, the third since the Fourth of July holiday last Thursday.

Couple that with a staggering number of rescues due to strong rip currents and beach safety officials say it's a time to be extra aware.

According to officials, Monday's shark attack happened just after 11 a.m. in Ponce Inlet.

Authorities say a 15-year-old from Flagler County, who was swimming as part of the county's junior lifeguard camp, was the victim of the shark bite.

“From what it sounds like, he was doing what we call ‘water entries,’ as part of the camp where they run and jump in the waves," said Aaron Jenkins, deputy chief of Volusia County Beach Safety. "Sounds like he hit the shark and the shark, in reaction, might’ve bit him on the right calf.”

Beach Safety says that teen suffered just minor injuries and that the bite likely came from a 4-to-5 foot blacktip, a common shark in that area.

This attack follows attacks on July 4 and 5 in New Smyrna Beach.

All the swimmers are expected to recover.

While frightening and unfortunate, Beach Safety says there are certain clues to tell you to avoid the water, like the presence of many bait fish, or if you are suddenly seeing cloudy or murky water.
