MARION COUNTY, Fla. — With just two lanes, backups are common on U.S. Highway 41 in southwest Marion County, from State Road 40 down to Dunnellon city limits.
Some drivers who live in that area said they want to know what will be done about it.
MaryJo Smith said she’s concerned about the congestion near Rainbow Springs State Park.
“You can’t get in or out of the neighborhood without putting your life on the line,” Smith said.
“This poor little highway — two lanes doesn’t always serve well to that growing population.”
On top of that, Smith said it’s sometimes hard to see traffic snarls ahead because of the terrain.
“You’re coming up a little hill, so God knows how backed up the traffic is because you don’t know,” she said.
The Florida Department of Transportation does have a plan to widen US-41 from two to four lanes, with a grass median.
Paved shoulders and new sidewalks are also planned for the 4-mile project, from north of State Road 40 to SW 110th Street.
While right of way has been acquired, construction on the $50 million project won’t start until July 2028.
In the meantime, FDOT is researching interim measures to enhance safety.
“The department is exploring additional measures to enhance safety and driver awareness along the corridor prior to the construction of the widening project,” FDOT District 5 Public Information Director Cindi Lane said.
Smith said she hopes something is done sooner rather than later to address the backups.
“We just wish someone would take into consideration southwest Marion County and make the roadways safer,” she said.
