ORLANDO, Fla. — Orange County is starting work with the city of Orlando to look at backups at a busy intersection in the Millenia area.

What You Need To Know

  • Armond Dao says traffic backups are a problem for those trying to turn left onto northbound John Young Parkway from eastbound Millenia Boulevard

  • When Orange County extended Holden Avenue to John Young Parkway, one of the two left turn lanes on eastbound Millenia Boulevard was converted into a through lane

  • Dao said the second turn lane needs to come back

  • Orange County officials say they are working with the city of Orlando to find a solution for the backups

Armond Dao says driving home from Home Depot or Costco means taking the John Young Parkway, and that’s where he has problems.

“There used to be two left turn lanes here. Then when they connected Holden Avenue to Millenia Boulevard, then it became one left turn lane,” Dao said. “Now, traffic just starts backing up for people trying to turn left. So on the weekends it can take you three-plus light cycles just to get out.”

Orange County extended Holden Avenue to John Young Parkway in 2022.

One of the left turn lanes on eastbound Millenia Boulevard was converted into a through lane to get on the Holden Avenue extension.

“I can be waiting up to 15 minutes if I’m all the way back there, especially after lunch on the weekend,” Dao said, while waiting at the light to turn onto John Young Parkway.

Dao said he would like to see that second turn lane come back.

After Spectrum News 13 reached out to Orange County, public works and traffic engineering decided to hold meetings with the city of Orlando, since the westside of the intersection is in the city’s jurisdiction.

Over the past several months, they’ve met to go over possible solutions.

No final plans have been made as funding is a concern, but interim proposals, like adjusting the timing of the signal or re-striping the road are being considered.

Dao said he hopes the county and city can figure out a solution.

“Every minute counts,” he said.
