PORT ORANGE, Fla. — The Port Orange Police Department have confirmed that a fourth-grade student who was hit in front of Sugar Mill Elementary Friday morning has died from her injuries.
Police said the student was struck near the entrance of the school by a vehicle that was exiting after dropping off another student.
Volusia County Schools' Director of Communications Danielle Johnson said the student was riding her bike when she was hit shortly after 7 a.m.
Volusia County Public Schools initially stated that the child died from her injuries, but clarified shortly after that the student had been transported to the hospital in serious condition.
Police confirmed around 11 a.m. that the child was taken to Halifax Health in Daytona Beach and was later pronounced deceased.
Police said the driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Several parents expressed frustration over what happened, saying there isn't enough safety measures in place to prevent accidents like this. One parent said their child was hit in the same area.
However, Johnson said the school district works closely with the city and other agencies to make sure students are safe and have made recent updates to the area.
She also said grief counselors are on campus to assist students and staff.
Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood sent out a statement on the tragic accident.
"A heartbreaking loss for a family that got the worst news imaginable today. My sincere condolences and prayers are with them and the Sugar Mill Elementary student body and staff. Port Orange PD will conduct a thorough investigation to determine how this occurred, which will help identify any steps that could help prevent another tragedy in the future. Right now I ask everyone to say a prayer for strength for this grieving family."
Officials said additional details will be released once they become available. If anyone has information regarding the incident, they are asked to call the Traffic Unit at 386-506-5838.
Volusia County students have one week left of school.
