According to the Ocala Police Department, a 23-year-old man who was shot on May 19 while storming at police with a knife and bear spray will now face charges. Police said they were called around 12:15 p.m. Sunday by the man’s mother, who was taking him to The Vines Hospital, a mental health clinic in the area.

He left the hospital before being admitted, police said, and investigators found the man at SW 27th Avenue.

During a press conference after the incident, police officials said officers tried calming the man down and ordered him to drop the knife and bear spray he was holding. Once he began spraying, an officer shot the man multiple times, police said.

Ocala Police Department officials said they believe officers followed training perfectly. But the incident could bring back talks on implementing a crisis intervention partnership. Ocala police officials said they respond to mental health calls daily, and they aren’t opposed to the idea.

“A focus of mine is mental health resources. We’re always going to be looking at other ways we can address this ongoing issue," Ocala Mayor Ben Marciano said. "Even a question was asked, are there other services available? I think we can do more. I think we’re going to be looking at that.”

The 23-year-old man is currently under 24-hour guard watch at HCA Florida Ocala Hospital. He is being charged with multiple counts of aggravated battery on a police officer and with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

No officers were injured in the shooting. The officer who shot the man has been placed on paid administrative leave, as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the incident. That is standard protocol in any shootings involving law enforcement.
