ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — What's good for one neighborhood is good for others. Everyday Hero Sandy Miller believes that, and she's sharing that message.
Miller is part of a group of volunteers sprucing up a neighborhood in Orange County's Pine Hills community, but the efforts are more than just trimming trees and sweeping streets.
"The community that I lived in was starting to go in the wrong direction, so we stepped up; we got voted in on the board, and then we took over," Miller said, as she described the effort that she and the homeowners association board members came up with in their neighborhood.
Miller is part of the "People of Clarcona-Ocoee" group, which goes into other parts of Orange County to spruce up the communities and bring them together.
"You may live next door to your neighbor, but you don't know who they are," Miller said. "Then once you're out there cleaning and doing things, then they come out and then you can introduce, and you meet with them, and then all of a sudden you've got a collaboration."
Miller and the other volunteers were along Powers Drive sprucing up neighborhoods — washing walls, trimming trees, raking thatch from medians, and mending fences with a coat of paint. Miller said the cleanup does not just make things look nicer, it helps reduce crime.
"You want to have security, you want to have a sense of pride in your community, and so I think that's part of it," Miller said.
Clarcona-Ocoee Road won "Corridor of the Year" in 2023, awarded by Orange County District 2 Commissioner Christine Moore. Moore started the "Corridor Chiefs" program several years ago, and winners receive benches, LED lights or street light pole banners.
