DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Police say a Daytona Beach nightclub that saw its second shooting incident within a year will have more security cameras installed near the location.

- Daytona Beach police say they will further enhance security efforts in the Seabreeze Boulevard Entertainment District after a weekend shooting left four people hurt
- The shooting over the weekend follows a similar incident last July that left community leaders calling for solutions
- Police Chief Jakari Young says the department has hired 18 new officers, and he will continue to maintain and deploy officers in Seabreeze and Grandview
The weekend shooting took place outside Razzle’s nightclub, where four people were hurt.
The suspect, identified as Misael Maldonado, was arrested moments after police say multiple shots rang out. He now faces four counts of attempted murder.
Last July, a separate incident left three people injured, and left community leaders calling for solutions to curb violence.
A police substation was since added to the Seabreeze Boulevard Entertainment District, and earlier this year, the city installed 20 security cameras.
Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young says more will now be installed.
In video released of Saturday’s incident, it shows his officers along Grandview Avenue before the shooting. Then, moments later, officers see a man waving a gun and firing shots, only a few yards away from the police substation.
Body camera video shows the suspect running away, then dropping his firearm.
“When you can literally see the police substation, right up the street, and you see officers standing there and the shooting still occurs, it’s baffling,” said Young.
Young says it was the first major incident since implementing new safety initiatives.
“This guy he was determined. He was going to do what he did, whether we were there or not. We just so happened to be there,” said Young.
The chief says they’ve had problems in the past in that area, but it’s typical of bar districts in general. He says these cameras have been helpful in monitoring activity, and gathering evidence to try to prevent incidents.
Lashanda Jones and Lashandra Miles, both advocates against gun violence, lost loved ones and say they will not allow violence to go on in Daytona Beach.
“It’s senseless to me,” said Jones.
“I’m just wondering when is this going to is stop,” said Miles.
“If you see something, say something,” both said in unison.
Chief Young says the department hired has 18 new officers, and he will continue to maintain and deploy officers in Seabreeze and Grandview.
“We too are sick and tired of the gun violence and we’re going to continue to step up our efforts,” he said.
Detectives are still investigating what led up to the shooting. The police chief says when Maldonado was caught, he immediately requested his attorney.
Young says he’s turning the case over to the state attorney now.
