WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. — Saturday, a lift station in the backyard of Winter Springs resident Sarah Baker’s home looked like a waterfall with water gushing at a speedy rate.
What You Need To Know
- A lift station in the backyard of a Winter Springs resident malfunctioned Saturday and led to wastewater being poured out
- It is not the first time a failure has happened at the property
- The city fixed the issue and the mayor says the Florida Department of Environmental Protection has been notified to investigate
The city says there was a malfunction, and the issue was fixed, but it’s not the first time it has happened on this property.
Her son was playing in the yard when he started to notice a distinct smell and then saw water flowing.
“There was overflowing, cloudy, disgusting water coming out,” said Baker. “It smelt horrendous. It was raw waste coming out in to my yard.”
As the water pooled, she says it leaked into Howell Creek behind her home. Baker immediately called the city of Winter Springs’ emergency utility line to inform them what was going on.
According to Winter Springs officials, utility crews did respond and determined a control system failure as the cause of the malfunction.
The city also points out there was an unknown amount of sewage that had spilled.
Winter Springs mayor Kevin McCann went to visit the site and speak to Baker, but the homeowner isn’t just frustrated with the overflow.
“An alarm never sounded to say it was overflowing,” she said. “Not only did it fail the pump itself, it never would have alerted anyone. Had we not come out and smelt the waste, we could have not known and it could have been a lot more.”
According to McCann, the city has notified the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
“While such events are not uncommon in Florida, the city takes these incidents seriously and is working to determine precisely what occurred and how to prevent future events,” the Winter Springs mayor said.
