In total, 15 states will vote in the presidential primaries on March 5, and there are some important dates on the calendar all voters should keep in mind.
Voter registration closes on Saturday, and anyone who wants to change parties or register altogether must do so by then to participate in the primaries.
“If you're a Democrat, you can't vote in the Republican primary,” said Secretary of the Commonwealth Bill Galvin. “If you're Republican, you can't vote in the Democratic primary. Independents can vote in either primary and do not become party members. So, any change in party enrollment has to occur by Saturday. It can be done online, but it's important to do it by Saturday.”
Saturday is also the day cities and towns open the ballot boxes for the first day of early in-person voting.
“Early voting in-person, that will happen in every city and town in Massachusetts,” Galvin said. “There'll be an opportunity to vote early, in-person beginning on Saturday the 24th, which will run for a week. This is the only full weekend that will conclude on Friday.”
People who are already registered to vote have gotten a postcard in the mail where they can apply to vote by mail, which needs to be sent in by Tuesday, Feb. 27. Early voting ends March 1.
Galvin said it’s a bit too early to speculate on turnout, but their vote-by-mail applications have been healthy. He encouraged anyone with questions to check with his office, and a link to all the information can be found here.
