LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A Lake County viewer said it’s difficult to turn out of his senior community in Lake County because of speeding drivers coming up the hill on U.S. Highway 27.
Chuck Durkin said there have been bad crashes at US-27 and Kings Ridge Boulevard in the Clermont area.
“If you’re trying to gauge the speed of the people coming up the hill, it’s very difficult,” said Durkin, who has lived in the Kings Ridge senior community for 13 years.
Drivers heading north on US-27 are going so fast that it’s difficult for his senior neighbors to determine if they’ve got enough time to make a turn off Kings Ridge Boulevard, Durkin said.
“You’ve got to judge the speed of the cars coming up the hill in order to make your right turn,” he said.
To complicate matters, those seniors, according to Durkin, have to yield to those making U-turns at the intersection.
“You got to make sure the people making a left are really making a left,” Durkin said.
He would like a traffic light.
But Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Peyten Maki said a traffic study conducted last year determined a traffic signal wasn’t warranted at the intersection.
Maki said the available sight distance and the traffic volume should be adequate enough for drivers to make the turn, out of the community, safely.
“Additionally, a review of three years of crash history also did not show any crashes that would have been correctable by a new traffic signal,” Maki said. “Furthermore, the department concluded that installation of a signal could potentially increase the possibility for high-speed rear-end crashes along US-27.”
Durkin said he is disappointed a traffic signal isn’t coming.
“It would save a lot of accidents, for sure,” he said.
