People living in the Astor community are closely watching the water, which is already covering some streets in spots.

It’s also reminding homeowners what they dealt with last year when Hurricanes Ian and Nicole caused major flooding in the area.

“I’m from Massachusetts and as long as I’ve been here, I don’t like the hurricanes,” said Kate Makovec. “It gets tedious, you know, you’re just stuck in your house. I go crazy.”

Makovec’s home didn’t flood last year, but floodwater surrounded it, leaving Makovec and her husband stuck at their home for several weeks.

She says a neighbor with a large high-profile vehicle helped them get out occasionally for groceries and other necessary items.

So far, water is covering some of her neighborhood’s streets, limiting where she and her dog can walk.

“This is high,” said Makovec.

The St. Johns River at Astor has reached the lower level of moderate flood stage.

It’s not expected to go up much more, with river levels forecasted to stay at the level they’re at for several days before receding.
