SPENCER, Mass — Fair food, good music and a chance to donate to help fight homelessness in a local town. The Spencer Police Department is teaming up with the town's senior center, Open Sky, and the Central Mass Housing Alliance to start a homeless emergency fund.

Open Sky accepted donations all weekend at the Spencer Fair. They say they've found more than 28 people living in homeless encampments in town. The fund will help place these individuals in hotels during extreme weather or other emergency events.

"It's really important because these are people's lives. Without awareness, we don't know there is a problem and once we have the awareness we need to be able to help and support these people," said Ashley Leiton with Open Sky.

Open Sky said they've raised more than $350 at the fair so far.
