ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A viewer wants the state to use red light cameras to capture other illegal maneuvers by drivers on Central Florida roads.

What You Need To Know

  • Mike Sciotto says he gets cut off when drivers from the center lane make illegal left turns in front of him

  • Sciotto wants red light cameras to be used to capture these illegal maneuvers

  • State statute would have to be changed to allow the cameras to be used for that

Mike Sciotto has spent more than three decades as a teacher in Orange and Osceola counties. He says drivers aren’t following the rules of the road.

“We’ve had people in this lane, this center lane, cut over and nearly sideswipe people,” Sciotto says, as he made a left turn.

He says drivers will often make illegal maneuvers, like turning left from the center lane, cutting him off.

That’s why he contacted Traffic Inbox.

“We’ve got these red light cameras all over the place,” Sciotto said, “why aren’t they using these same red light cameras to enforce people who make illegal turns and sideswipe people?”

In Orlando and Orange County, there are multiple locations with red light cameras. Sciotto wants them to capture drivers making those illegal turns.

So we asked. Turns out, the technology is there. An Orlando spokeswoman says similar cameras can use lasers to capture drivers using the center lane to turn left.

The problem, however, is that the state statute would have to be changed by lawmakers to use the cameras for that use.

An Orange County red light program project coordinator tells us even for crashes or other crimes, red light cameras are only used as secondary information or evidence, not the primary tool.
