OCALA, Fla. — Marion County was under a flash flood warning for several hours Tuesday as torrential rain came down, totaling upwards of 6 inches in some areas. Ocala Fire Rescue crews were out on the streets, responding to over 30 calls relating to severe weather.

What You Need To Know

  • Ocala and the surrounding areas experienced flooding

  • Local responders have been handling flooding incidents for years

  • They say that residents should apply what they learned to potential hurricane situations

Captain Pat Feagle has been a firefighter for Ocala Fire Rescue for over 2 decades.

“I’m a second generation firefighter. My grandfather was a firefighter. It skipped a generation,” said Feagle.

He knows a thing or two about responding to storms.

“When we have things like this happen, flash floods come in. It’s a multi-agency response that helps mitigate it,” said Feagle.

Tuesday morning Feagle and his crew responded to several emergency calls: everything, from people’s cars stuck in flood water to neighborhoods experiencing flooding.

“Typically, when we have heavy floods in the Ocala area, we have certain areas that flood more than others. Sometimes it could be hazardous for drivers, especially. This is an example right here in the Fisher Park area,” said Feagle.

The Fisher Park area is closed until further notice due to the flooding in the area.

Battalion Chief Larry Doerffel with Ocala Fire Rescue said the area got at least 5 inches of rain earlier on Tuesday. Residents should take any lessons learned seriously.

“This could be somewhat similar to what you could get in an experience during a hurricane,” said Doerffel.

As for Feagle and his crew, they’re on their next call, continuing to protect the Ocala community.

“It’s important for everyone to understand when we do have bad thunderstorms and hurricanes, flash flooding that the best thing you can do is stay indoors and stay home. Being out on the roads in not the place for anyone to be. All that does is add more chaos to an already chaotic scenario,” said Feagle.
