Nazareth College celebrated one of the biggest moments in its 99-year history this week, with the school marking its transition to university status.
Wednesday marks the final step in the process to secure approval from the New York State Board of Regents for the name change.
"It’s a meaningful transition because in some countries, the word college means high school,” Nazareth University President Beth Paul said. “So it better reflects that we are a full undergrad and graduate institution. So I do think that'll be helpful in attracting international students. But I think all students will be attracted to the fullness of what we are. And this is a better way to help them understand that."
"The change to Nazareth University is not just about meeting certain criteria. This change aligns our heritage and mission with higher education institutions around the globe and solidifies the influence of a Nazareth degree," said Scott Chapman '05, member of Nazareth's board of trustees. "I'm proud that this was truly a campus community-wide decision with overwhelmingly positive feedback from our current students, faculty, staff, and more than 36,000 alumni. Nazareth University further showcases our rich history of educating changemakers and the inclusive environment we've built here that instills community and belonging as life-long values."
The name change from Nazareth College to Nazareth University officially goes into effect at midnight on June 1.
Also unveiled were Nazareth's new visual identity, including an updated logo.
