ORLANDO, Fla. — A family and community continue to grieve in Daytona Beach after 16-year-old Frederick Cooper was shot and killed late Wednesday night just doors down from his home.
The shooting happened in the 400 block of Hudson Street. Police have not identified a suspect or person of interest, but many, including friends and family, are trying to understand why their friend, “Coop” was attacked.
Cooper's family and friends say he was the type of kid that had no enemies.
His mother called him “Snack Attack” because he loved Skittles and anything sweet. Those who know him said “Coop,” as many of his friends called him, was the boy in the neighborhood that would walk his friends home at night after it got dark.
About three years ago Cooper and his family moved to Daytona Beach from South Florida. At the time, the new kid on the block instantly became friends with neighbor Tomaya Scott.
"We’d be in class and every morning he would ask me, 'Where’s my snacks?'" Scott said. "He (would) want me to bring him snacks every morning at the end of first period. Nothing but candy."
After school, Scott said the two would typically hang out.
“Normally, when I am over here late at night, I don’t like to walk home by myself," Scott said. "Normally, Coop walked me home."
On Wednesday night, Scott said that’s exactly what Cooper did. Twenty minutes later, she said she heard several nearby gunshots.
"I seen my brother laying on the floor," Cooper’s sister Kiaundra Jackson said about the night he died.
“It was like, I was trying to talk to him and he was not responding, but he was still breathing," she said. "He was looking at me and his eyes started rolling back, so I didn’t know what to do."
Jackson said she did what she could while help was on the way.
Shortly after reaching the hospital late Wednesday, officials say Cooper died from his injuries. Some brought flowers Thursday to where the neighborhood friend lost his life.
Cooper’s mother says they will likely have some type of memorial for her son in the next few days involving balloons.
As for his fellow classmates, school officials say support services are being made available at his school.
The district sent out a statement following the tragic incident:
Spruce Creek High School and Volusia County Schools are mourning the loss of a student, Frederick Cooper, last night. The district’s crisis response team has been dispatched to Spruce Creek to offer additional bereavement support services to students and staff who may be experiencing grief. We offer our condolences to Frederick’s friends, family and loved ones, who knew him better as “Coop.” The loss of any individual is such a difficult time, but it is further tragedy when it is a young student who is a victim of violence. Spruce Creek is a strong community that will lean on each other, cherish the memories of their classmate, and honor him.
Daytona Beach Police continues to work the case.
