WEST MELBOURNE, Fla. — Charlie Settgast gets dozens of emails coming to his email inbox daily that just seem off.

- West Melbourne's police chief brought the idea with him from Illinois
- A workshop will be held at 9 a.m. May 11 at the West Melbourne Police Department
"The most typical scams are, 'You have a package waiting,' a lot of Amazon-related. ‘If you don't do something, your account will be canceled'," Settgast says. "I don't have an account."
The 85-year-old says he's fully aware some of those emails involve all the scams out there targeting seniors.
West Melbourne Police say they hope to help seniors by teaching them how to avoid becoming scam or fraud victims in a program called Seniors and Law Enforcement Together, or SALT.
Newly hired Police Chief Greg Vesta brought the idea from his former department in Illinois.
He says seniors are trusting.
"They don't want to hang up on someone,” Vesta says. “They don't want to be rude to someone, and getting them to understand some people aren't looking out for their best interest is what we are trying to do.”
The SALT workshop is at 9 a.m. May 11 at the West Melbourne Police Department.
Seniors will also learn about local crime trends and awareness, plus traffic concerns and neighborhood issues.
Settgast, who is active in his community, says he plans to attend and hopes to help answer questions he receives from others.
