ORLANDO, Fla. — Friends and family of a young man killed in a crash in Orange County over the weekend gathered in Flagler Beach Thursday evening to remember him.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say that at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday morning, a 15-year-old allegedly driving a stolen car with five other teenagers inside it, ran a red light on Dean Road at State Road 408 and crashed into 23-year-old Christian Romero’s car, killing him.
The community held a vigil with Romero’s family, who say they still have many questions about what led to the crash.
“We want to know where these parents were, why did they not know where their children were,” said Dawn Romero, Christian Romero’s mother.
“We want to know what these consequences are that are going to be brought against these kids," she continued. "We’re not looking for them to lose the rest of their life, but we just want to know there are some type of consequences.”
Romero also had a message for other parents.
“Keep your kids safe and keep them under control, and have them have consequences,” she said. “We just need to be in better communication with our kids — I think that’s what’s most important now.”
Romero’s family lives in Flagler County and owns and operates Romero’s Tuscany By the Sea Italian Restaurant on Flagler Beach.
Karen Dion runs Flagler Foodie Groupies, an online network that supports Flagler County restaurants, and says other restaurants, businesses and community members are helping to support the Romero family during this difficult time.
Dion says employees at The Anchor helped the Romero’s out.
“They offered to go into the restaurant and to make sure they got all the food that was going to expire removed from the restaurant, so they worked for a couple of hours to get that going, so it’s been a full community effort,” said Dion.
