WINTER PARK, Fla. — After being hit by a red-light runner, one Winter Park man wants changes on busy Aloma Avenue in Winter Park.

Ralph Losey said he and his wife were driving to visit their grandchildren in December when he turned from Phelps Avenue onto Aloma Avenue westbound. That's when a vehicle T-boned his car.
Losey’s vertebrae was cracked, and he had to wear a neck brace for six weeks straight — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
“It’s not a lot of fun, particularly to try and sleep on it,” Losey said. “You can’t move. It was tough, it was tough. I don’t wish this on anybody.”
The woman that hit him, he said, told police she had the green light.
“She actually lied and said I ran the red light,” Losey said.
With no way to prove it, Winter Park police found nobody was at fault.
Now Losey said he wants the city of Winter Park to install a red-light camera.
“That way they’ll know and can prove who ran the red light and who didn’t,” Losey said.
The city is considering installing one after a study showed more than 30 crashes occurred at the intersection since the start of 2020.
The city has been in conversations with the police department about researching the feasibility of placing a red light or monitoring camera at the intersection, a city spokesperson said.
“(It was) pretty traumatic,” Losey said. “I had a concussion for quite a while, but I forced myself to face my fear and get back on the road. And it took me a long time before I dare go back to this stop light again.”
Even though he’s still going through a lot, Losey said he forgives the woman who hit him.
“I’m glad she wasn’t injured, the driver that hit me,” he said.
Losey just wants to make sure the next driver is held accountable.
