The bill now heads to the House where Senate President Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) also expects it to pass.

What You Need To Know

  • Senate Bill 102, to expand and expedite affordable housing, cleared the Senate unanimously

  • The legislation heads the House, where it is expected to pass

  • The bill, if passed into law, would fund housing efforts by more than $1 billion

If passed into law, SB 102 would expedite construction of more affordable units, fund housing efforts by more than $1 billion, expand tax exemptions for developers, and broaden zoning requirements.

“We’re never going to be able to provide housing for everybody. But right now we’re in a crisis and we’ve got to do something particularly for the missing middle, the people that make too much to qualify for the current programs and too little to actually be able to afford a place to live,” Passidomo said.

“We are doing something that is far reaching. We’re all just passing through, so when we’re no longer on this stage this is something that’s going to remain, that’s going to improve the lives of people here in the state of Florida,” Sen. Geraldine Thompson (D- Orlando) said.

Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign the bill into law when and if it comes across his desk.
