ORLANDO, Fla. — A brand new museum, that organizers say is possibly the first of its kind, is set to open this month: The Women’s History and Cultural Center, which is set to feature an exhibit honoring Girl Scout History.

What You Need To Know

  • The Women’s History and Cultural Center exhibit honoring Girl Scout history is slated to open to the public on March 11

  • The museum is headed up by six volunteers with the Girl Scouts Citrus Council

  • It features more than 100 years of Girl Scout items, including vests, badges, and much more

  • Archivist Marilyn Whiddon is one of those working ahead of the grand opening

Volunteers say that behind every item is a story — though some others may have been lost to time during the Girl Scout’s 110 year history.

“Some of those are before my time as a Girl Scout,” archivist Marilyn Whiddon said while pointing at rings in the exhibit.

Whiddon has been volunteering with the Girl Scouts for about 30 years. She said volunteers began collecting memorabilia about 15 years ago, and recently decided it needed to be showcased to the public.

Six volunteers are spearheading the project, and they said it’s been a labor of love that they have been able to put together with the help of a lot of donations, and thrift shop finds.

“Eventually we’d love to have all brand new cases, but we’ll have to work on that part,” Whiddon said with a laugh.

She said that there are so many items, not all can be showcased at one time, and the ones not displayed are individually archived.

“Alright, this one is an A21,” Whiddon said as she sorted through uniforms.

She said girls will get a chance to see the archive behind the scenes at different events, and even get the opportunity to try some items on.

“We are very excited to be able to share, because there’s so many things that the girls today, I don’t think have any idea what was actually used years ago,” said Whiddon.

The museum also features an “inspiration room,” featuring books about important women throughout history.

“We’re Exposing some of the wonderful things that women have done, that’s the most important thing,” said Center Director Lydia Sealey. “I want this to be an inspiration, that’s why we refer to this as the inspiration room.”

The exhibit opens on March 11.
